13 Intrusive Thoughts That Should NOT Keep You From Booking a Postpartum Massage

Your body has done something extraordinary. You carried and birthed a baby. And now you’re adjusting to an entirely new reality, physically, emotionally, hormonally, relationally.

In the midst of it all, postpartum massage can be a powerful tool for healing and grounding. In fact, nurturing touch is one of the five essential universal components of postpartum healing discussed in Kimberly Ann Johnson’s “The Fourth Trimester.” And yet, so many mothers delay or avoid booking care because of intrusive thoughts that sneak in.

Let’s name them. And let’s be clear: none of these should stop you from getting the care you deserve.

1. What if I leak milk during the massage?

Firstly, it’s completely normal. Secondly, we’re prepared with towels that we set under the sheets, and understanding. Your body is incredible, and leaking milk may be a part of the postpartum journey.

2. What if I pass gas?

Also normal. Especially postpartum, as your organs shift back into place, there may be more air trapped in your torso. We don’t flinch. We’re here for your healing, not your perfection.

3. What if I didn’t have time to shave?

We could care less about your leg hair. Truly. Our focus is on your well-being, and does not get in the way of giving or receiving a great massage.

4. What if I smell bad?

Postpartum bodies go through intense hormonal changes. Increased body odor can be part of that. While a clean body is always appreciated, we understand and embrace the reality of new motherhood. We’re not here to judge, just to nurture.

5. What if I cry during the session?

Please do. Your body and emotions have been through so much. Tears are welcome on the table. You may be surprised how much better you feel afterwards.

6. What if I fall asleep?

We take that as the highest compliment. Your nervous system needs rest. Healing can happen when you go to that deep place of relaxation. Let your body receive it.

7. What if I feel exposed or vulnerable?

We drape carefully and talk you through everything so you feel safe, covered, and in control at all times.

8. What if my body doesn’t feel like “mine” yet?

That’s exactly why massage can be so powerful right now. It’s a chance to reconnect with your body in a safe, supportive way.

9. What if I’m bleeding or wearing a pad?

We can absolutely work around that. We’ll adjust positioning and linens as needed. Comfort and dignity are always our priority.

10. What if I have a c-section scar or trauma I don’t want touched?

You’re in control. We’ll avoid any area you’re not ready to include. No explanation needed, just let us know what feels best for you.

11. What if I feel ashamed of how my body looks now?

Your body is powerful and capable. It deserves care, exactly as it is today. Massage about how you feel, and how we can help you feel better.

12. What if I don’t know how to ask for what I need?

You don’t have to. We can figure it out together. We’re skilled at reading the body’s cues and will check in gently throughout the session.

13. What if I can’t relax because I’m thinking about my baby?

That’s okay too. Many new mothers feel this way at first. But more often than not, your body will settle into deep relaxation just a few minutes in.

You Deserve Support, Not Perfection

So many mothers carry these intrusive thoughts silently. But here’s the truth: postpartum massage is made for this messy, emotional, in-between time. You don’t have to be healed or “together” to be worthy of receiving care.

And remember:

Postpartum doesn’t end after 6 weeks.

It lasts at least two years... and many would say, once postpartum, always postpartum.

If you didn’t get the care you needed after birth (or didn’t know you could), it’s never too late to receive it now.

We highly recommend at least 4 massages in the first 3 months postpartum, and at least monthly after that.
