As we all navigate what is being asked of us–to grow into the anti-racist society we need to become, I'm compelled to share where we stand as a business, and where I am currently on this journey.
I’m fully committed to the path of anti-racism, AND I’m far from having it all figured out. This will be a lifelong learning and un-learning process. I’d like to share the resources that I’m supporting and learning from with you, with the understanding that it is far from complete. With that, I’d love to invite you to respond to this email with your resources too, so we can learn from one another, and grow together.
The mission of Sparrow’s Nest is to nurture birthing people to have the best birth outcomes and feel deeply resourced as new parents. As institutionalized racism creates huge health disparities, with black women and babies dying at a rate 3-4x that of white women in this country, many of the resources I’m providing are specific to closing this horrendous gap.
To our clients who want to make a difference locally in maternal health disparities, here are a couple of suggestions:
Donate to Kindred Space LA’s vision of a birth center in South LA, run by black midwives. In Honor of Mothers: KSLA Birth Center Fund
Donate towards local senior student midwife Haize Hawke’s finishing midwifery training & board exams Black Midwifery Support & Ancestral Wisdom
Donate to JUMP Start Student Midwives of Color Program
